A cubicle, by definition, a partially enclosed workspace separated from neighboring workspaces by 5-6feet partitions, by significance, a part of everyday life! Do you know from where this word cubicle emerged? It originated from the Latin word cubiculum meaning bedchamber and was used in English since the 15th century. I know most of you are a part of the corporate cubicle culture where in your work and workspaces are confined to your cubicles! I agree, cubicles are means to work with concentration and without distraction. Agreed, that they allow workers more privacy, but don't they sometimes create that 'caged' feeling in you? Don't they at times give you a 'sitting-in-a-clutter' feel? Try to visualize yourself. What do you do all day in office? Of course you work but while kind of caged in your cubicles! The less heights of partitions between the cubicles were meant to make a person more approachable over the cubicle partition. Cabins are sometimes claustrophobic and they seclude the individual inside, making him cut of from the world outside his cabin. But are cubicles serving the right purpose? Do most of us bother to look out of our cubicle walls and interact with the people around? Are we open enough to seem approachable to each and every individual of the organization?
On the positive side of it, a cubicle serves for every employee as a space of his own. It is that little space which solely belongs to the individual and serves as a platform for his little expressions. You can decorate your cubicle, pin nice pictures or proverbs to cheer you up. You can keep a small photo frame of someone you love in your cubicle...the picture might inspire you to work with dedication. You can actually make your cubicle look livelier using the cubicle walls creatively to hook some funny and nice triggers. You can decorate the partitions to brighten up the atmosphere in your cubicle...and feel fresh to start off! Cubicles are good options for workspace customizations! But do not forget to look over those partitions to reach out to those on the other side!
